Your Next Perfect Family Weekend in Mannum

Coastal and wine regions tend to lead family getaway plans in South Australia, yet a short drive toward the Murray introduces a totally different kind of weekend. Mannum brings riverfront play, paddle steamer history and time on the water, with Monarto Safari Park adding a memorable stop on the drive home.

Rethinking the SA Family Getaway

Packing the car on a Friday afternoon usually points toward the coast or a familiar wine region, yet a turn toward the Murray tells a different story.

Quiet Mannum sits far beyond routine and traffic noise, it’s a place where paddle steamers rest along the riverbank, playgrounds spill onto wide lawns and houseboats drift past as part of everyday life.

For families, the town offers plenty to fill a weekend without needing a long list of plans. Mornings can start with river history at the Dock Museum, drift into time on the water, then carry through to mini golf, foreshore picnics or a wander through town. With Monarto Safari Park a short drive away, Mannum becomes more than a riverside stop; it turns into a base for a family break that feels refreshingly different from the usual getaway.

Here’s how a family weekend in Mannum can come together in two diverse and adventurous days.

Friday Night: Arrival and Dinner at Mannum Motel

Arriving after work, check into Mannum Motel and settle straight into dinner at the on-site restaurant, a convenient start after the drive and one less thing to organise with kids in tow.

Afterwards, a short wander down to the foreshore gives everyone a chance to reset after the week, with the Murray River, houseboats and the town’s working ferry quietly drifting between banks in the background. Enjoy a sunrise and watch the place turn red before heading back for the night.

Saturday Morning: Paddle Steamer Stories and River Time

After breakfast on Saturday morning, begin the day with a coffee, shortly followed by a trip to the Mannum Dock Museum, where historic paddle steamers and old machinery bring the town’s river past into focus.

Kids get to step aboard vessels here, peer into engine rooms and connect the boats they see outside with the stories behind them. There’s some interactive parts as well as some interesting things for the adults in the group.

Saturday Afternoon: Mini Golf and Foreshore Adventure

With the river so close to your accommodation, the late morning naturally leads to time on the water. Kayak or paddleboard hire provides a family-friendly way to experience the Murray firsthand, helping you glide past houseboats and spot birdlife along the banks. For younger kids, a short scenic cruise is also a great idea, and keeps the experience engaging without the need for paddling.

After lunch, a round of mini golf adds a playful change of pace and a bit of friendly competition. Ice cream or a café stop afterwards keeps the afternoon feeling like a treat before returning to the foreshore, where playground time, skipping stones and watching boats as they come and go provide plenty of entertainment without needing a structured plan.

Then it’s back to Mannum Motel for a rest.

Saturday Evening: Casual Dinner and Riverfront Wanders

As evening arrives, head out for a casual dinner in town, choosing from pubs and cafés within walking distance of the river.  Choose from something simple like fish and chips which you can eat by the river, the local Indian restaurant, or Pretoria Hotel & Cellars; a well-known riverside pub on Randell Street with a bistro serving classic Australian pub meals.

Afterwards, another stroll along the foreshore and back to the hotel offers a calm close to the day.

Sunday Morning: Monarto Safari Park Stop

Pack up and begin the drive home, but don’t worry it’s not time to leave yet!

Not long into the journey, take the turning to Monarto Safari Park, located about 40 minutes from Mannum. The open-range park delivers an incredible shift in scenery, with safari bus tours passing giraffes, lions and rhinos and walking trails linking expansive habitats. The park covers more than 1,500 hectares, making it the largest open-range zoo in Australia and one of the biggest in the world.

Playgrounds and picnic areas allow time to break up the visit before continuing the journey.

Sunday Afternoon: Homeward Bound

After lunch, or one final safari loop, continue toward Adelaide with a weekend shaped by river experiences, hands-on history and wildlife encounters in your memory forever!
