Top 5 Best Day Trips from Traralgon

Within an hour of Traralgon, you can be walking through dense fern gullies in Tarra-Bulga National Park, winding along empty country roads, or heading towards the coast. There are endless day trips waiting to happen here, with small towns, lookouts and walking tracks appearing along the way so you can stop to stretch your legs. Here are some of the absolute best day trips from Traralgon.

A gateway to Gippsland’s wild landscapes

Rainforests, coastal havens and swathes of open farmland all sit within easy reach of Traralgon in Gippsland’s Latrobe Valley. Just 160 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, Traralgon is a small town where just about any kind of day trip is possible. An hour in almost any direction takes you somewhere completely different. Seriously. From the thick fern canopy of Tarra-Bulga National Park to almost silent country roads and stretches of coastline further south, it’s a super practical spot for people wanting to explore Gippsland.

And don’t forget the mountains either. North of the town, the land rises into the Great Dividing Range. South, the roads wind into the dense, green Strzelecki Ranges. Small towns, lookouts and walking tracks are dotted all throughout, often quieter than Victoria’s more well-known spots.

Just a quick 30 minutes away, Tarra-Bulga National Park is the real highlight of a trip to Traralgon. It feels like stepping into another world. Towering mountain ash and thick fern gullies create one of the last pockets of temperate rainforest in the region.

1. Tarra-Bulga National Park (40 min)

One of Gippsland’s most well-known pockets of temperate rainforest, Tarra-Bulga is dense with thick fern gullies and a green canopy that magically filters light right down to the forest floor.

The Lyrebird Walk is the most popular route here; just a short loop that includes a suspension bridge and some of the park’s most dramatic fern-filled sections. Meanwhile, longer trails link into the wider Strzelecki Ranges for those who want more of a challenging hiking option.

Tarra-Bulga is one of the last remaining cool temperate rainforest systems in the entirety of Victoria, so you’d be mad not to at least go for a drive and short walk to check it out whilst you’re in town.

2. Walhalla Historic Town (50 min)

Welcome to Walhalla, a tiny former gold-mining town buried deep into a narrow mountain valley. This cute little spot feels almost frozen in time, with its preserved 19th-century streetscape and its steep, winding main road following the contours of the land.

The Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine is a good place for an excursion, offering guided tours that take you into the region’s mining past, while the Walhalla Goldfields Railway runs restored heritage trains through the surrounding forested slopes. Walhalla was once one of Victoria’s richest gold mining towns, and it’s now known for its quiet, atmospheric setting where history sits, framed against the mountains.

3. Wilsons Promontory National Park (2 hrs)

One of Australia’s most iconic coastal national parks, Wilsons Promontory is all rugged granite mountains and bright white sand beaches, with wildlife that pops up all over the place; from wombats on the trails to emus near the roads. The scenery here is made up of ancient Devonian granite, formed around 400 million years ago and later exposed by erosion to create its dramatic coastal landscape.

The hike up Mount Oberon is the standout option, leading to a fantastic viewpoint over Tidal River and the surrounding coastline. But there are other, shorter options too. Some branch off to quiet coves like Squeaky Beach and Whisky Bay.

4. Gippsland Lakes / Lakes Entrance (2 hrs)

If you’re in Gippsland, you’ll probably want to visit the Gippsland Lakes; Australia’s largest inland waterway system. This stunning region is home to a vast network of lakes and lagoons that meet the Southern Ocean at Lakes Entrance through a narrow, tidal inlet known as “the Entrance.”

The system includes major waterways like Lake Victoria, Lake King and Lake Wellington. Lakes Entrance itself has long been a working fishing port, with the iconic footbridge marking the point where the lakes meet the ocean and a great place for a wander.

The Esplanade here runs right alongside the water, with walking paths and boat hire available at various locations, so you can get right next to, and on, the lakes without much difficulty. You might also want to try out the nearby Ninety Mile Beach which stretches for many kilometres along the coast, separating the lakes from the open sea.

You won’t get bored very quickly here!

5. Mount Baw Baw National Park (1.5 hrs)

Mount Baw Baw, north of Traralgon is an entirely different change of scenery and a proper, refreshing reset from Gippsland’s lower valleys, climbing into the Victorian Alps where snow even settles in winter. In the summer, the mountain air is cool and hangs over the mountains so you get a little break from the heat.

Sitting on the edge of the Great Dividing Range at around 1,500 metres, you get a good contrast of dense mountain ash forest and then alpine grassland with rocky ridgelines in between. If you’re visiting in winer, you’ll also find yourself at one of the closest ski areas to Melbourne, with walking tracks and lookouts in the same area during summer months.
