Things to Do on K’gari (Fraser Island): Top Attractions & Experiences

K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is the world’s largest sand island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of Queensland’s most iconic natural destinations. Stretching over 120km along the Fraser Coast, the island is famous for its vast sandy highways, crystal-clear lakes, ancient rainforests, and rich Indigenous heritage.

From bubbling rock pools and freshwater creeks to historic shipwrecks and even a night-time light show, K’gari offers something for every traveller.

Whether you’re here for a day trip or a week-long escape, these are the top things to do on K’gari.

Swim at Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)

No trip to K’gari is complete without a dip in Lake McKenzie. Known for its pure silica sand and bright turquoise water, this perched lake is fed entirely by rainwater, giving it incredible clarity. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the island and the perfect place to cool off on a warm day.

Explore the Maheno Shipwreck

Couple walking along the beach past the historic shipwreck

The SS Maheno, once a luxury ocean liner and later a World War I hospital ship, ran aground on 75 Mile Beach in 1935. Today, its rusting hull is one of K’gari’s most famous landmarks. Easy to visit by 4WD, the shipwreck is both a striking photo stop and a glimpse into the island’s history.

Float Down Eli Creek

Eli Creek is the largest freshwater stream on the island’s eastern side, pumping millions of litres of crystal-clear water into the ocean every day. Grab a floatie or simply wade in the shallow waters as you drift along the gentle current. With picnic areas and a boardwalk, it’s a favourite family-friendly stop.

Discover the Champagne Pools

Just north of Indian Head, the Champagne Pools are the only safe ocean swimming spot on 75 Mile Beach. Waves crash over volcanic rock into natural pools, creating a fizzing, bubbly effect that lives up to the name. It’s one of the most unique and refreshing swimming experiences on the island.

Take in the Views from Indian Head

Climb to the top of Indian Head, a dramatic rocky outcrop at the island’s northern end, and enjoy panoramic views across the coastline. From this vantage point, you might spot dolphins, turtles, rays, and even migrating whales (July–October) in the waters below.

Wander Through Pile Valley Rainforest

K’gari is the only place in the world where rainforest grows from sand. Pile Valley is home to towering satinay trees, kauri pines, and lush palms. It’s an incredible place to stretch your legs and connect with the island’s unique ecology.

Experience Illumina at Kingfisher Bay Resort

For something completely different, don’t miss Illumina, Queensland’s first permanent light, laser, and projection show. Staged nightly at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Illumina uses the surrounding bush as a natural canvas to tell the story of K’gari’s formation, heritage, and environment. It’s a spectacular and immersive experience that adds a whole new perspective to your island adventure.

Drive Along 75 Mile Beach

Known as K’gari’s “sand highway,” 75 Mile Beach is both a road and an adventure in itself. You’ll pass by many of the island’s most iconic attractions, including The Pinnacles coloured sands, Eli Creek, and the Maheno Shipwreck. Keep an eye out for light aircraft too — this is one of the few beaches in the world where planes can land.

Spot Whales at Platypus Bay

Between July and October, Platypus Bay becomes one of the world’s best whale-watching spots. Humpback whales migrate here to rest and play with their calves in the calm, sheltered waters. Whether you join a whale-watching cruise or look out from the shore, it’s a breathtaking sight.
