The Perfect Melbourne Weekend Itinerary (Includes the Yarra Valley)
19th August 2026
Forget trying to see all of Melbourne in one visit, that’s what return trips are for. This itinerary is about grabbing the essentials: a laneway bar you’d never find without a local tip, a rooftop view worth the elevator ride, a market haul you didn’t plan for, and a day trip to the Yarra Valley. Two days and a proper taste of everything that makes this city (and the region around it) worth the hype.
Laneways, Rooftops, and Everything Between
Melbourne throws a lot at you in one weekend, laneway bars tucked behind unmarked doors, rooftop views over a skyline that keeps growing, markets stacked with produce and vintage finds, and vineyards close enough to visit before lunch. Locals will tell you the city rewards curiosity over planning, and after a couple of days wandering its grid of streets and hidden corners, you’ll understand why. Coffee culture runs deep, street art covers entire blocks, and the energy shifts completely depending on which pocket you’re standing in.
First-time visitors often arrive expecting a straightforward city break and leave having also explored rolling vineyards, sampled regional wine, and stumbled into a bar they never would have found on a map. That mix of polish and personality, city buzz and countryside calm, sits at the heart of what makes Melbourne worth the trip. Two days is plenty to sample a bit of everything: the laneways, the rooftop bars, the markets, and a proper taste of the Yarra Valley beyond the city limits.
The Perfect Melbourne Weekend Itinerary
Here’s how to spend the perfect weekend in Melbourne.
Friday Night: Arrive in Melbourne
There’s no easing into this city gently, so you might as well start as you mean to go on!
Check in to The Adelphi Hotel on Flinders Lane, and you’ll already be right in the thick of it, CBD energy on your doorstep and laneways begging to be explored before you’ve even unpacked.
Start classy at Gimlet at Cavendish House; the top pick for elegant French-Australian fare, all within walking distance of the hotel. Feeling like going big? You could also choose Vue de Monde on Rialto’s 55th floor, which serves up skyline views that give you a fantastic overview of the city.
From there, top off the night at Siglo on Spring Street. This spot pairs cocktails with one of the best views in the city, while Naked for Satan in Fitzroy brings a grungier, more bohemian rooftop energy if you’re after something a little different. Or, if the thought of another Uber sounds exhausting, just head back to the Adelphi.
Saturday Morning: Classic Melbourne
Start with breakfast in one of Melbourne’s famous laneway cafés around Degraves Street or Centre Place. Grab a proper Melbourne coffee and have a wander through the laneways while the city gets going on a Saturday morning. Drop into some shops, admire the graffiti and absorb Melbourne.
From there, head to Queen Victoria Market for a proper browse. This is a great place to pick up some fresh produce, deli bits or snacks, and just soak up a bit of Melbourne life, as the locals live it. Afterwards, you could either stay in the city and explore the street art around Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane in more detail, or head to the Royal Botanic Gardens for something a little greener.
Before leaving the city, make sure you stop for a good late lunch. You could keep it classic with a pie from one of Melbourne’s institutions, or just grab something quick in the CBD before heading off.
Still got a little time? There’s a whole world of Melbourne wonder waiting for you in Fitzroy where boutiques, cafes and a general laidback feel give you another taste of city life.
Saturday Evening: Head to the Yarra Valley
Leave the CBD behind for the hour-long drive out to the Yarra Valley, tower blocks giving way to open paddocks, vineyards, and rolling green hills along the way. Check in to Chateau Yering; a grand 19th-century homestead that once housed one of the valley’s original vineyard properties, all wraparound verandahs, antique furnishings, and manicured gardens that make it feel more like stepping into another era than a regular hotel stay!
In the evening, try dinner at the hotel’s own restaurant, Eleonore’s. Their seasonal menu is built around local and regional produce and paired with an extensive Yarra Valley wine list, all served up beneath ornate high ceilings with views rolling out across the vineyard. A real Yarra Valley experience!
Sunday: Yarra Valley Wine Day
Sunday belongs entirely to the Yarra Valley’s wineries! Plan a loose loop between cellar doors and get going when you’re ready.
Ease in with sparkling wine and views at Domaine Chandon, the perfect place to start with a glass in hand and vineyards stretching out in every direction. From there, head to Yering Station, Victoria’s oldest vineyard, where the historic cellar door pairs nicely with a proper sit-down lunch. For something more contemporary, Oakridge Wines is known for standout chardonnay and pinot noir, plus a restaurant that’s earned a reputation of its own.
If you want to break up the tastings with something other than wine, TarraWarra Estate delivers on both fronts because alongside the beautiful cellar door there’s an art museum.
