Passing Through Mildura On Your Roadtrip? Here’s Why You Should Stop
5th May 2026
Australia has a way of turning distances into decisions, especially on long road trips where the next stop can feel hours away. Some places appear on the map more than they do in conversation, yet they shape how the journey unfolds. Mildura is one of those names that makes you slow down and think twice before driving on.
A Stop on the Road Between Australia’s Cities
Long drives are part of travelling in Australia. The distances stretch out quickly, and the routes start to feel familiar in a way that only happens when you’ve been on the road for hours.
Whether you’re heading from Sydney to Adelaide, cutting inland from Melbourne, or coming through regional New South Wales or Victoria, there are certain places that naturally appear along the way. Mildura is one of them.
It sits out in the north-west corner of Victoria, right by the Murray River, and for most road trips it becomes a practical waypoint rather than a planned destination. You see the name on the map, the kilometres start to make sense in chunks, and it becomes the kind of place you either pass straight through or pause in briefly before continuing on.
So, is it actually worth stopping? Let’s find out.
Should you stop in Mildura?
Yes, absolutely! If you are driving between Victoria and South Australia, or New South Wales and South Australia, this is one of the better places to break the journey properly rather than just pulling in for fuel and moving on.
Mildura sits on the Murray River, so the stop revolves around the water a getting a real breathe of fresh air (although it can be pretty hot here!). Stretch your legs along the riverfront walks, pick up local produce like citrus and dried fruit from roadside stalls and farm shops, or head slightly further out to places like Perry Sandhills for a landscape that feels completely otherworldly and unique from the drive in.
If you have more time, it also works well as an overnight stop. Nearby nature areas like Murray Sunset National Park add a unique stop, plus Mildura is a fantastic spot to stargaze, located in an International Dark Sky Reserve.
What to do if you only have a few hours
So you’ve got a few hours to freshen up before getting back in the car. Where do you start?
Firstly, head straight to the riverfront and walk a section of the Murray. The shaded paths around the marina and riverfront parks are a fantastic way to stretch your legs after a long drive, with plenty of spots to sit by the water if you just want to relax your mind before continuing the drive.
From there, head out to Orange World, where guided tours take you through working citrus orchards and give you a proper feel for the region’s fruit-growing history, plus tastings along the way. This is a great way to get a taste (literally) of local life. If you have time for one more stop, Mildura Golf Resort is a pretty good spot for a quick round or a drink overlooking the course.
For something more scenic, Perry Sandhills is where soft red dunes transport you to far-flung deserts. It’s a completely different feel from the river and town here, especially late in the day when the light drops into the night.
It’s not all about nature here though. If you have extra time, you can also visit nearby Sunraysia wineries such as Capogreco Wines or smaller cellar doors around the region, where tastings are often set against river and vineyard views.
Before you head off, there’s always time for a meal. Eat along the Murray River at spots like The Boathouse or nearby cafés on Hugh King Drive, where tables are close to the water and you can hang out properly before getting the car back on the road.
Where to stay overnight
We get it, when you’re covering long distances it matters to actually stop properly, get a good sleep, and break the drive up. Sleep in a comfortable bed, wake up to breakfast and wander to a local cafe before you hit the road once again.
So if you do decide to stay in Mildura, these are two solid options.
Kar-Rama Hotel
Kar-Rama sits right in the centre of town and fits pretty well if you want everything within walking distance after a long drive. It has a recently refreshed, retro-inspired feel, with a pool courtyard that becomes the natural place to kick back once you’ve checked in. The rooms are simple but comfortable and modern, plus the location makes it easy to walk to Langtree Avenue for dinner or back down to the river for an evening stroll without needing to get in the car again.
Mildura Golf Resort
The golf resort sets you up for a different kind of overnight stay entirely, set slightly outside the main town with more space, greenery, and that “stay longer than planned” kind of feel. Stop here for a quieter night, where the evening can stretch out over a course view rather than a town street. You can play a round, sit out with a drink, and wake up feeling like the road trip took a proper pause.
