Okay Read MoreHow to Get to K’gari (Fraser Island) via Hervey Bay
17th September 2025
Planning your trip to K’gari (Fraser Island) and wondering the best way to get there? Don’t stress, we’ve got you covered. There are a few different ways to reach the world’s largest sand island, but the easiest and most popular is via Hervey Bay, the main gateway to K’gari. Whether you’re bringing your own 4WD, hiring one for the adventure, or simply hopping over as a walk-on passenger, getting across is simple and convenient.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different options including ferries, barge transfers, vehicle hire and flights so you can focus on the fun part: planning your island escape.
SeaLink Ferry from River Heads

The SeaLink K’gari Ferry departs daily from River Heads (just outside Hervey Bay) to both Kingfisher Bay Resort on the west coast. The trip takes about 50 minutes and offers stunning views of the Great Sandy Strait along the way.
-
Bringing your own vehicle? Pre-book your spot on the barge and drive straight onto the ferry.
-
Travelling without a car? Walk-on passenger tickets are also available, and resort transfers can be arranged directly from Hervey Bay.

Both Kingfisher Bay Resort and K’gari Beach Resort can also assist you with ferry bookings, making it easy to package accommodation, transfers, and even tours together.
4WD Hire
Don’t have your own vehicle? No problem. While you’ll need a 4WD to explore K’gari’s sandy tracks, you don’t necessarily need one for your entire stay. Aussie Trax 4WD Hire has an office right next to Kingfisher Bay Resort, making it super easy to check in and collect your car once you’ve arrived.
You can hire a vehicle just for the day if you’d like to explore at your own pace, or skip the driving altogether and join a guided 4WD tour where the experts take you to the island’s top spots. Either way, getting around K’gari is simple, flexible, and stress-free.
Fly into Hervey Bay

If you’re coming from further afield, you can fly into Hervey Bay Airport from Brisbane, Sydney, or other major cities. From there, it’s a short transfer to River Heads where the SeaLink ferry departs. This makes it possible to leave a capital city in the morning and be on K’gari by lunchtime.
Resort Assistance
If planning feels overwhelming, let the resort teams handle it. Both Kingfisher Bay Resort and K’gari Beach Resort act as one-stop shops — helping with:
-
Ferry and transfer bookings
-
4WD hire or connections
-
Day tours and multi-day tour packages
-

This takes all the hassle out of your trip and ensures everything is lined up for your arrival.
