The Perfect 48-Hour Golfing Trip to Mildura Golf Resort

Getting away for the weekend starts with a change of scenery, and a new golf course is as good an excuse as any. In Mildura, a chilled-out few days come together just perfectly. Time and chatter on the course, tasty food with green views, and morning coffees under the Mildura sun. Craving a blend of activity and space to switch off? You’ve found just the ticket at Mildura Golf Resort.

A Golf Weekend by the Murray

Trying out a new golf course usually comes with a bit more than just the game itself. It’s the drive there, the very welcomed change of scenery, perhaps a beer or two and the excuse to turn a round of golf into a proper weekend away.

In Mildura, in the heart of north-western Victoria’s Sunraysia region, and just a short drive from South Australia’s Riverland, Mildura Golf Resort is an 18-hole championship course set right on the Murray River. Right there next to it, you have accommodation, a clubhouse, bar and restaurant to keep you focused on the golf (but with a few welcome distractions).

The course at Mildura Golf Resort itself is known for its flat, open fairways and generous layout. It’s playable but still very engaging over a full day. And adding to its uniqueness, the course is surrounded by river red gums lining parts of the course and long patches that sit very close to the Murray; typically Mildura!

So stay on-site, play golf all day, enjoy a cold beer with fairway views and still be close enough to head into Mildura town for dinner or a change of pace. Here’s what your golfing weekend in Mildura might look like this autumn.

Friday: Arrive in Mildura

From wherever you’re arriving, the drive into Mildura looks like long roads, warm air, and lots of space. If you’re coming from the city, you’ll feel the contrast right away. Check in at Mildura Golf Resort, drop your bags, then head straight out for a walk around the grounds, past the clubhouse and out toward the course where the fairways open up and the Murray runs just alongside.

In your room, you’ll have everything you’ll need for a golfing weekend, including a table and chairs, television, free Wi-Fi, fridge, air conditioning unit, tea and coffee equipment, small out door area overlooking the golf course and ensuite bathroom.

Now that you’re all settled in, for dinner, head to the resort restaurant, where the menu is all about the classics. A solid bistro-style menu offers favourites like burgers and schnitzels, with themed nights bringing in locals and lots of energy. Afterwards, grab a drink at the bar, then take it outside if the weather’s good or call it an early night and prepare for a full day of golf.

Saturday: Golf Day and Dinner

Morning

Saturday morning starts nice and early. Get out on the course while it’s still quiet, with the option of grabbing breakfast before the first tee or saving it for after a few holes. When it comes to the golf course, this one’s built on red sand, and has a naturally shaped layout with gently rolling fairways, native vegetation throughout, and a mix of water features that come into play across several holes. You’ll find that the greens are kept in excellent condition year-round, giving the whole course a consistently well-presented feel in every season.

There’s a bit of history underfoot too, with players like Eric “Von” Nida having walked these fairways, famously carding a 68 here, which adds something to the experience as you move through the course.

Afternoon

When lunch time arrives, head over to the restaurant and take a seat overlooking the fairways, where the view heads straight out across the course with glimpses of the Murray sitting just beyond the tree line.

You may have eaten here last night, but there are plenty of clubhouse favourites to pick from – burgers, schnitzels, steaks and seafood – all which taste better with a cold beer and a bit of downtime between rounds. Speaking of beers, select one from many at the bar; something local or easy tap lager, as you watch people cross over the greens.

Finish the round, with the option to stay a little longer if there’s still daylight left. As the sun starts to drop and long shadows reach across the fairways, it’s time to head back to your room to get ready for a meal in Mildura.

Evening

As evening comes in, head into town where the centre is super compact and easy to wander around. Select from a handful of great bars and restaurants all within a short walk and watch the local buzz grow into the evening.

Dinner options range from Andy’s Kitchen, known for modern Asian shared plates in a lively setting, to Stefano’s Restaurant, a long-running institution focused on more refined, seasonal dining with a strong local reputation. After dinner, return to the resort for the night, or if you’re feeling fancy stop by Elias for a cocktail before bed.

Sunday: Explore Mildura Before Heading Home

Breakfast at Mildura Golf Resort kicks off the morning just wonderfully, then head into town and stop for coffee at places like Ziggy’s Cafe, known for solid coffee and a steady local crowd, or The Pantry Mildura, which also does a good brunch-style menu if you end up wanting breakfast out and about.

From there, wander Mildura’s main streets, where cafés, small boutiques, and the river precinct are close enough to explore on foot.

When the town has shown you enough, a short drive out brings you to the Perry Sandhills; a natural dune system formed over thousands of years as the Murray River changed its course and left behind layers of fine sand that wind has shaped into rolling formations. It’s a pretty impressive site and a nice place for a walk.

Parking is at the main entrance area off the road, and from there it’s just a short walk straight into the dunes. Walking, photography, and just exploring on foot are all possible, and it’s definitely worth a visit.

With the weekend coming to a close, head back into town or small snack if needed, then return to Mildura Golf Resort to check out and begin the journey home!
