You Don’t Actually Need a Car for K’gari

It’s everywhere you look: fuel prices are high right now, and you really start to feel that when planning a trip. No, it might not mean putting everything on hold, you’ve got to get away once in a while! But with prices soaring, how you choose to travel might need to change.

The obvious way to dodge high fuel costs is of course, to reduce driving time. Instead of building a trip around your car, you might like to start thinking about what it would look like to holiday a little differently. We’re talking about less time on the road and much more time spent outside, enjoying one place. And right now, we’re talking specifically about K’gari.

K’gari is often seen as a car-heavy trip (totally understandable when you see the sheer size of the place!), but it doesn’t have to revolve around hopping in and out of a car. Multi-day, single or half-day tours take you to the main spots without you needing to organise anything at all. The resorts are kitted out for the perfect island getaway. And beaches are totally idyllic. So what’s stopping you from getting everything you want out of a K’gari getaway, without constantly filling up the tank

Make Use of K’gari Explorer Tours

One of the easiest ways to visit K’gari without a car is to let someone else handle the driving. K’gari Explorer Tours are the ones to speak to about just this. Offering a range of guided options, they take you straight to the island’s highlights; no 4WD hire, no pricey fuel, and almost no planning required.

If you’re short on time but big on ambition, full-day tours are the simplest option. These typically include stops at places like Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck and a drive along 75 Mile Beach. You pretty much cover the major sights in one day, with transport, guide, and logistics sorted.

But for something more in-depth, multi-day tours also run over two or three days and include accommodation, meals, and ferry transfers. These trips give you access to more of the island without needing to organise anything yourself, making them a strong option if you want a fuller experience without the cost and hassle of driving.

Tours generally depart from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, with transfers included, so it’s easy to build into a car-free trip from the mainland.

Staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort

If you’re staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort, there’s even more you can do without leaving the area. The resort runs a range of ranger-guided activities, including eco walks, bush tucker talks, and wildlife experiences, plus the nightly Illumina Night Show. There are also optional extras like cruises and water-based tours, so you can fill your time without needing to travel far at all.

Depending on your particular interests (from whale watching to spa treatments), there’s a package available here for everyone.

Staying at K’gari Beach Resort

You could also go a little wilder with your choice and stay at K’gari Beach Resort. Based on the eastern and very rugged side of the island, this is a spot for those looking for true immersion in K’gari’s nature and an escape from civilisation.

Stay Put for the Day

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be constantly moving around K’gari to enjoy it. In fact, both Kingfisher Bay Resort and K’gari Beach Resort are set up so you can stay in one place as long as you wish, and still have a full but relaxing trip.

At Kingfisher Bay Resort, enjoy four lagoon-style pools, multiple restaurants and bars, and an on-site Island Day Spa if you want to fully switch off. Start your day with a swim, grab breakfast, then join a ranger-guided walk or canoe experience, or just spend the afternoon by the pool or down by the calm western beach.

Dinner might be fresh local seafood, followed by sunset drinks or even a low-key evening experience like the light show or stargazing. Everything is right there, no need to go anywhere.

On the other side of the island, K’gari Beach Resort has a slightly different feel. You’ve got a lagoon-style pool, tennis courts, a beachfront setting, BBQs, and access to McKenzie’s on 75 Restaurant, plus a bakery and bar for casual meals.

Both options prove the same point! You don’t need to be driving around all day to “see” all of K’gari. The island lends itself to slowing down, staying in one place, and actually enjoying where you are.
