Where to See the Best Sunsets in Adelaide
12th March 2026
As the sun sinks toward the west, Adelaide offers a front-row seat to some spectacular evening light. From hilltop lookouts and coastal cliffs to city rooftops and long jetties, these are some of the best places around Adelaide to watch the sky change from gold to orange in the evening.
Adelaide’s Best Sunset Views
As the day winds down in Adelaide, the sun drops slowly over the CBD before disappearing into the Gulf St Vincent. It’s a direction that works in the city’s favour, because facing the coast, Adelaide offers uninterrupted views of the horizon, with the Adelaide Hills rising behind and the ocean stretching out ahead. Picture perfect.
From hilltop lookouts, you can watch the light move across the landscape in stages, first catching the ridges of the Adelaide Hills, then sliding across the city skyline, and finally melting into the sea. Meanwhile, down at the coast, the sky turns pink over long jetties and sandy beaches. Adelaide certainly has no shortage of places to watch a sunset.
The following spots offer some of the best places around the city to catch the evening light. Let’s take a look!
Mount Osmond Lookout
High above Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, Mount Osmond Lookout is where one of the most impressive views across the city comes to life. From the ridge you can see the hills fall beneath you, the grid of suburbs across the plains, the CBD skyline and the coastline meeting the waters of Gulf St Vincent.
Drive up Mount Osmond Road to the Mount Osmond Golf Club and park nearby, then walk a short distance to the lookout just before sunset. And don’t forget to bring a picnic blanket! Facing west, the elevated viewpoint lets you watch the last light move across the city before the skyline begins to glow and the lights slowly appear across Adelaide.
Skye Lookout
A favourite with locals looking for a quieter viewpoint, Skye Lookout sits high above Adelaide’s eastern suburbs in the Adelaide Hills. The lookout faces west across the city, with clear views over the houses, the CBD skyline and the coastline in the distance. Take the steep drive up to the lookout via Skye Road where there is space to pull over and park. From the edge of the viewpoint, the whole city is shown below, making this stop an easy place to watch the sun drop toward the ocean.
Mount Lofty Summit
We can’t mention sunset views in Adelaide without mentioning this one. The most famous viewpoint overlooking Adelaide, Mount Lofty Summit sits at the highest point in the Adelaide Hills. From the lookout the entire city expands below, with the city skyline and the ocean visible on clear evenings.
It might be a little late to do the Mount Lofty hike from Waterfall Gully at this point in the day, as the walk back down can take an hour. So, drive up to the summit and park near the visitor area before walking a short distance to the main lookout. Make sure you arrive early by car for sunset, as the road back down becomes very dark once the light fades away.
Windy Point Lookout
Just a short drive into the Adelaide Hills, Windy Point Lookout sits above Belair Road with a clear view back across the city. Pull into the small parking area beside the lookout and walk to the edge of the viewing platform where Adelaide spreads out below, the CBD rising from the suburbs and the coastline faint on the horizon. This is the perfect spot for a quiet and nature-filled experience for the evening.
Port Willunga Beach
South of Adelaide, Port Willunga Beach is one of the most dramatic places to watch the sun go down along the Fleurieu Peninsula. And that’s because golden sandstone cliffs rise above the beach here, while the remains of the old jetty pylons stand in the water just offshore. You’ll want to park near the top of the cliff and follow the path down to the sand. From the shoreline you can watch the sun drop straight into the ocean, with the cliffs catching the last warm light and the pylons creating a striking silhouette in the water.
Henley Beach Jetty
A classic Adelaide sunset spot, Henley Beach Jetty draws locals to the coast as the day winds down. It’s not necessarily a unique option, but it’s always a winner. The long jetty points straight out into the water, giving you an uninterrupted view west as the sun drops toward the horizon.
Park along Seaview Road and wander down to the sand or walk out along the jetty itself. When the sky turns pink and orange over the ocean, the square behind the beach fills with people picking up fish and chips or settling in at the nearby restaurants to watch the evening unfold.
Hallett Cove Conservation Park
A little further out of town, and south of Adelaide, Hallett Cove Conservation Park offers a rugged coastal place to catch the sunset. Clifftop walking trails are super accessible for a quick walk and they follow the coastline, with stunning views across the gulf and distinctive rock formations scattered along the shore. You can park your car right near the boardwalk entrance and follow the coastal path along the cliffs for as far as you like. From the lookout points you can see the long curve of the coastline and the dark bands of ancient rock below the cliffs.
SOL Rooftop
For a different kind of sunset, head up to SOL Rooftop above North Terrace. Instead of cliffs or hilltop lookouts, the view here is all glass towers (great for reflections of the sun) and city streets far below. As the sun goes down behind the buildings, the last light reflects across the glass as Adelaide slowly shifts from golden hour into the dark of evening.
Where to stay in Adelaide
A central base makes it easy to explore Adelaide’s sunset spots, whether you’re heading up into the Adelaide Hills, driving out to the coast or staying in the city for rooftop views. Try these two for handy options not far from any of the sites:
KT Apartments offer a comfortable stay close to the CBD, but also a short drive from the base of the hills. From here it’s a short trip into the centre for rooftop bars like SOL, and the drive to the western beaches are also within easy reach by car.
Econo Lodge East Adelaide, located in Kent Town just outside the city centre, is another convenient and affordable option just outside the city. From here it’s easy to head into the CBD, drive out to beaches like Henley or Glenelg, or follow the road up into the Adelaide Hills.
